Tapping and the Tag
freeself needs an iPhone that can read the Tag. Every iPhone from the iPhone 7 onward can. If you see this on a supported device, restart your iPhone. The reader occasionally stops responding after an iOS update.
The phone usually moved away before the read finished.
- Hold your phone flat against the Tag, with the upper half of the iPhone touching it.
- Keep it still for about a second after you feel the haptic tap.
- Remove thick cases or magnetic wallets, which weaken the signal.
The Tag is linked to another freeself account. Each Tag belongs to one account at a time. If it is yours, write to contact@freeself.app with your order number and we will release it.
The scanned tag is not a freeself Tag. freeself only works with the original device. Generic tags do not pass verification.
The freeself screen has to be open and showing Tap to start. Background scanning is not possible on iOS. Open the app first, then tap.
Blocking and Screen Time
freeself relies on Apple's Screen Time. It needs explicit permission:
- Open Settings → Screen Time on your iPhone.
- Make sure Screen Time is enabled for This is My iPhone.
- In freeself, open Settings → Permissions and allow Screen Time access.
- Confirm the system prompt.
If you declined the prompt once, iOS will not ask again. Delete and reinstall freeself to be prompted a second time.
Screen Time blocks by the category an app reports to iOS, and not every app fits a category cleanly. Select the app individually under Modes → Edit → Apps instead of relying on its category.
This usually means Screen Time was reset during a system update. Grant the permission again using the steps above, then start a new session.
Signing in
Either the connection dropped or our mail provider hit a short-term limit. Wait about thirty seconds and request the code again. If it keeps failing, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Check your spam folder, where the first message from us often lands.
- Make sure the address is spelled correctly.
- During busy periods delivery can take up to two minutes.
- Add contact@freeself.app to your contacts so future mail reaches your inbox.
Codes expire after ten minutes and work only once. Use the code from the most recent email, or request a new one.
Focus sessions
Three common causes:
- Screen Time permission has not been granted.
- The selected Mode has no apps to block. Open it and choose at least one.
- You are offline. Sessions sync briefly when they start.
Force-quit freeself, reopen it and tap your Tag again. If the block persists, restart your iPhone. Screen Time enforcement clears on restart.
A day counts once a session has run for the full duration set in your Mode. Sessions that are ended early do not count towards the streak.
Account and data
Open Settings → Account → Delete account in the app. This permanently removes your email address, sessions and streaks, and unlinks your Tag.
Install freeself on the new device, sign in with the same email address, then tap your Tag once to link it. The previous device loses access automatically.
Your email address and account data are stored on our servers in the EU. Which apps you block is handled by Apple's Screen Time and stays on your device. See our privacy policy for details.
